Our love affair with shopping began in ancient Rome, the city that became 'the centre of the world's commerce.

 

우리의 쇼핑 중독 사건은 세계의 상업 중심이라고 불렸던 도시, 고대 로마부터 시작했다.

 

>> 쇼핑에 대한 우리의 열광은 '세게 상업의 중심'이 된 도시인 고대 로마에서 시작되었다.

 

More than one million people lived in Rome by the third century AD.

 

백만명 이상의 사람들이 서기 3세기에 로마에 살았다. 

 

>> 서기 3세기쯤에는 백만 명이 넘는 사람들이 로마에서 살았다.

 

In order to feed this unprecedented population, vast warehouses and markets were needed, such as the fruit and vegetable market at the Forum Holitorium and the cattle market at Forum Boarium.

 

이 유례없는 인구에 식량을 공급하기 위하여, 거대한 창고들과 Forum Holitorium에서 과일과 채소 시장 그리고 Forum Boarium에서 우시장 같은 시장들이 필요해졌다.

 

>> 이 전례가 없는 인구를 먹여 살리기 위해 'Forum Holitorium'에 있었던 청과물 시장과 'Forum Boarium'에 있었던 우시장과 같은 거대한 창고와 시장이 필요했다.

 

But the Romans were not satisfied with food alone.

 

그러나 로마 사람들은 음식만으로 만족하지 않았다.

 

>> 그러나 로마인들은 먹거리로만 만족하지는 않았다.

 

{The specialist shops [whose window displays catch our eye on Main Street or in the mall}] made their first appearance in Rome,[ where there were shops for books, for precious stones and furniture.]

 

번화가 또는 상점에서 우리의 눈을 사로 잡는 진열을 보여주는 특별한 가게는 서점, 보석점 그리고 가구점이 있는 로마에서 그들이 처음으로 출현했다.

 

>> 중심가나 쇼핑몰에서 진열장의 상품 진열이 우리의 눈길을 잡아끄는 전문점들이 로마에서 처음 출현했는데, 이곳에서 책을 파는 가게, 보석과 가구를 파는 가게들이 있었다.

 

Rome even had the first supermarkets (known as horrea).

 

로마는 심지어 최초의 슈퍼마켓을 가졌다. (알다시피 horrea이다.)

 

>> 로마에는 심지어 (horrea라고 알려진) 최초의 슈퍼마켓도 있었다.

 

Many Romans live in tabernae, [consisting of one or two rooms which opened directly on to the street and {which, as well as homes, doubled as shops or workrooms.}]

 

많은 로마 사람들은 바로 열면 거리로 나갈 수 있는 한개 또는 두개의 방으로 구성된 집과 같은 가게 또는 사무실로도 이용한 tabernae에 살았다.

 

>> 많은 로마인들은 곧장 거리로 통하고, 집뿐만 아니라 가게나 작업실로도 쓰인 한 두개의 방으로 구성된 'tabernae'에서 살았사.

 

Indeed, look around the alleys and squares of old Rome today and you will see that there are still many shops that open on to the street, often without glazing or doors, and which are sealed at night using shutters.

 

정말로 예전 로마의 뒷골목과 광장을 둘러보면 그리고 오늘날, 당신은 흔히 판유리 또는 문 없이 그리고 밤에 셔터로 문을 닫는 많은 상점이 여전히 거리를 향해 열려 있는 것을 볼 수 있을 것이다. 

 

>> 실제로 오늘날 옛 로마의 골목과 광장을 둘러보면 보통 창유리나 문이 없이 거리로 통하는, 그리고 셔터를 사용하여 밤에 봉쇄되는 가게들이 아직도 많이 있다는 것을 알게 될 것이다.
